<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Last year I wrote a post about my <a href="http://www.magamerlina.com/2015/10/my-favorite-watercolor.html" target="_blank">favorite watercolors</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wrote about my favorite colors, how I choose them, brands, and my </div>

sets. You can read it <a href="http://www.magamerlina.com/2015/10/my-favorite-watercolor.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Although my sets are pretty much the same in the last five years or so, sometimes I make little changes which, depend on what I'm painting at the moment.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This time I replaced four colors in my big box, three because I wasn't using them and the other one just because I liked it better than the one I had.<br />

I can't describe the feeling of seeing your work being published, even more when it's featured in a book you LOVE!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Last year, the talented, hardworking and very organized <a href="https://100mandalas.com/kathryn-costa/" target="_blank">Kathryn Costa</a> from the <a href="https://100mandalas.com/" target="_blank">100Mandalas</a>, who I admire very much, asked me if I would send her some of my work for the book she was writing. What can I say? I couldn't be happier so, immediately said yes!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today I got on my mailbox a copy of her book, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Mandala-Guidebook-Paint-Color-Expressive/dp/1440344205?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0" target="_blank">"The Mandala Guidebook: How to draw, paint and color expressive mandala art"</a>, signed and addressed to me, a couple of her personal cards and a gorgeous thank you note.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thank you so much <a href="https://100mandalas.com/kathryn-costa/" target="_blank">Kathryn</a>, from the bottom of my heart!!! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I took some pictures to show you.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YBA2R1wSPro/V1ocngZ_95I/AAAAAAAABzU/dfC0WgGygaEKTmZutsjQNFmJAg4dPZFeQCKgB/s1600/blogger-image-737204032.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YBA2R1wSPro/V1ocngZ_95I/AAAAAAAABzU/dfC0WgGygaEKTmZutsjQNFmJAg4dPZFeQCKgB/s400/blogger-image-737204032.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A_l1-xynO5c/V1ocfO_-d7I/AAAAAAAABzU/u4uDkqEu9wM-QI8pYE6QSMOLubwMoQU4QCKgB/s1600/blogger-image--455299732.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A_l1-xynO5c/V1ocfO_-d7I/AAAAAAAABzU/u4uDkqEu9wM-QI8pYE6QSMOLubwMoQU4QCKgB/s400/blogger-image--455299732.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
The book is not only beautiful, but full of information on how to create your own mandalas, from freehand techniques to sacred geometry, how to make your own color combinations, collage, the use of different media, where to get inspiration from, and much more. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wish this book had been out when I started doing mandalas in 2001, this is exactly the kind of book I would have love to be able to get back then, one of my top favorite books on mandalas right now and my favorite mandala-how-to-book.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a photo of the table of contents so you can have a better idea of what's in it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Finally, here are some photos of my work on it and the actual pieces which I keep with me. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On of my mandalas even made it to the cover of the book!!!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The second one in a Mandala Stone, it's design was inspired in a mandala I had painted in one of my journals. On this page, my mandala from the cover appears again and complete.</div>

It's been a little bit to long since my last post, sorry about that, I haven't fallen of the web as some one pointed out on my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MagaMerlina-309797059034941/" target="_blank">Facebook Page</a>, I've been just lazy...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I thought it would be nice to have a sparkly return so, for today I'm going to present my favorite water-based metallic paint.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I recently got a <a href="http://www.finetec-mica.de/startseite-2/product-range/" target="_blank">FineTec M600</a><a href="http://www.finetec-mica.de/startseite-2/product-range/" target="_blank"> 6 Pearl Colors Set</a>. It includes five different golds and one silver. These are all gorgeous, rich and very sparkly! I haven't painted anything with these yet, only this color chart, but I'm already in love!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is a closer view of the color chart including all the metallic paints I mentioned above.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On the left only one coat of paint, on the right two.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uXCXASRvFnw/VvNLaU4PXxI/AAAAAAAABwc/XmOACTOzMhgqPCpXjHmz3fA7YTtqvLjuw/s1600/blogger-image--1806582671.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uXCXASRvFnw/VvNLaU4PXxI/AAAAAAAABwc/XmOACTOzMhgqPCpXjHmz3fA7YTtqvLjuw/s1600/blogger-image--1806582671.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Metallic paints are very difficult to photograph to show their beauty, I made a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BDUeBYDJH9y/?taken-by=magamerlina_" target="_blank">mini video</a> on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/magamerlina_/" target="_blank">Instagram</a> where you can see them better.</div>

One of the questions I get asked the most is which watercolors I use.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Over the years I've learned through experimentation which colors I prefer, which ones I like the most and how they behave and mix with each other.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I buy my supplies I prefer to buy in open stock, and although it could seem it's more expensive, in the long run is not. I never buy sets because they normally have a lot of colors I don't like and I don't use and end up buying more... </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All my watercolors are artist's grade, single pigment except two, the pigments are nice and rich and I don't get "mud" when I mix them. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I buy them in tubes to refill empty half pans, <span data-dobid="hdw">only occasionally</span> I have bought half pans.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As I mention, I have only colors I like, they are mainly Winsor and Newton Professional Watercolors,
some Daniel Smith, a couple of MaimeriBlu and a couple of Holbein.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have put together two watercolor sets, one to use at home and one I carry with me in my bag all the time. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The big one is the one that stays in my painting room.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is an empty box I bought in 2008 from Daniel Smith, unfortunately they don't sell it anymore.<br />
I just found this one <a href="http://www.amazon.com/FOME-Empty-Watercolor-Half-Pans/dp/B004XMEMQE" target="_blank">here</a>, called <span class="st"><i>FOME Empty Watercolor 24 Half Pan Box</i>, it</span> looks the same as mine before I modified it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was originally design for 24 half pans but I bent all the divisions inside and now I can fit 39 half pans.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's a photo with its color chart, I hope is big enough for you to read it. It has the name for each color, pigment code and brand. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4bOiY50Z9l0/VjbLnoULCoI/AAAAAAAABuY/7FarzStrxDY/s1600/blogger-image--627216748.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4bOiY50Z9l0/VjbLnoULCoI/AAAAAAAABuY/7FarzStrxDY/s640/blogger-image--627216748.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My little set is a Winsor and Newton Bijou box. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It originally came with only 8 half pans, but I removed all the metal bars and I can fit 15 Winsor and Newton half pans, which are slightly smaller than the ones you buy empty, otherwise it only fits 14.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This little box is not sold any more by Winsor and Newton, but I found this one <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Masters-Whiskey-Painters-Standard-Palette/dp/B00EJRJEYI" target="_blank">here</a>, called <span class="st"><i>Whiskey Painters Standard Palette </i></span>which looks pretty much the same as mine, but comes empty.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Find below </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
a photo with its color chart, again, it has the name for each color,
pigment code and brand. I have recently replaced the Payne's Grey for Winsor and Newton Designers Gold Gouache which I like more than the grey, and I can mix the grey ;)<br />
<br />
With the colors I have in this little set I can mix almost any color I need/want.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope this answers many questions, but please leave me a comment if you have any other.<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Nature is an endless source of inspiration and for me especially flowers. I love their shapes and their colors.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You'll probably know by now I love mandalas. For a while I've been drawing these Mandala-Flowers which are inspired in real flowers.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In this tutorial I'll show you how I do it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zxzyTryNKnk/VgNVxRt_laI/AAAAAAAABtE/0TpPtDzEBLg/s1600/blogger-image-1108603116.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zxzyTryNKnk/VgNVxRt_laI/AAAAAAAABtE/0TpPtDzEBLg/s400/blogger-image-1108603116.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NN7F1lBEsbk/VgNVzsUBz2I/AAAAAAAABtM/draAeEqTuQs/s1600/blogger-image--1597703952.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NN7F1lBEsbk/VgNVzsUBz2I/AAAAAAAABtM/draAeEqTuQs/s400/blogger-image--1597703952.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For this tutorial I used:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Stillman and Birn Alpha Series Sketchbook</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Staedtler Pigment Liners 0.05, 0.2 and 0.5</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A photo I took of a flower.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hRsqGulVPPA/VgNV2ACa8EI/AAAAAAAABtU/QukJPZkxZEc/s1600/blogger-image-1972196313.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hRsqGulVPPA/VgNV2ACa8EI/AAAAAAAABtU/QukJPZkxZEc/s400/blogger-image-1972196313.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can use any paper or pen/pencil you have. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As
for the photo, is better if you use your own photo or a photo which you
have permission to use. Most of the photos you find on internet have
Copyrights and are NOT for FREE use, so make sure what type of Copyright
it has before you use it.<br />
<br />
This is a photo I took at a friend's farm some years ago. It's the flower of one of my favorite tropical fruits called LULO in Colombia, its scientific name is <i>Solanum quitoense </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6-E2gsnPNuA/VgNWTMmTSsI/AAAAAAAABtc/-zVrZ7zKILU/s1600/blogger-image--1134880129.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6-E2gsnPNuA/VgNWTMmTSsI/AAAAAAAABtc/-zVrZ7zKILU/s400/blogger-image--1134880129.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
First, look at you flower carefully. I like to use actinomorphic flowers, which means that it's radially symmetrical, like this one, you can divide it in equal segments meeting at the center.<br />
This one has five segments.<br />
<br />
I start with a big dot which will be the center of my flower using the 0.5 Pigment Liner.<br />
<br /></div>
<table border="0" cellpadding="5" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left; width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CLhQTekk4oQ/VgNQZeieZxI/AAAAAAAABrU/U5OXd54_xzs/s1600/blogger-image-788823265.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CLhQTekk4oQ/VgNQZeieZxI/AAAAAAAABrU/U5OXd54_xzs/s320/blogger-image-788823265.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br /></td><td><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then I add the five heart yellow shapes using the 0.2 Pigment Liner.</div>
<table border="0" cellpadding="5" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left; width: 600px;"><tbody>
<tr><td><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now I draw the five light purple petals, each starting and finishing in the middle of each heart shape.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table border="0" cellpadding="5" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left; width: 600px;"><tbody>

</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next I put the five dark purple sepals between the petals.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table border="0" cellpadding="5" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: left; width: 600px;"><tbody>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now that I have my mandala flower with its main elements I add the details inside the main shapes. I like to add some other details not in the actual flower, they complement my drawing.<br />
I like to use the very fine 0.05 Pigment Liner for this, to have a little bit of contrast with the heavier previous lines made with the 0.2 Pigment Liner. The little dots within the heart shapes are done with the 0.5 Pigment Liner.</div>

You can make one or many, arrange them in a mandala like the first photo and previous tutorial or make a little composition page like the second photo.<br />
You can leave them as black and white drawing or color them in with you favorite media.<br />
You can add as many details as you want.<br />
<br />

<span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">For me nature is an endless source of inspiration, so is my journal.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">I like to look at flowers and draw my mandala version of them in my journal. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VfCoePE28Lc/Vd_JdqJoVmI/AAAAAAAABpo/8vaCGcM_5B4/s1600/blogger-image-1325030479.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VfCoePE28Lc/Vd_JdqJoVmI/AAAAAAAABpo/8vaCGcM_5B4/s320/blogger-image-1325030479.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ce6KVnG_iSU/Vd_Jk3njWDI/AAAAAAAABqA/MxQb63I4F7k/s1600/blogger-image-131214312.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ce6KVnG_iSU/Vd_Jk3njWDI/AAAAAAAABqA/MxQb63I4F7k/s320/blogger-image-131214312.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">I've done few pages full of these designs but this time I decided to organize my Mandala-Flowers in a bigger Mandala. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> When I finished, I thought it would be nice to paint my Mandala-Flower Mandala in watercolor with white ink details. I transferred the drawing I had made in my journal to watercolor paper and painted it with nice bright colors.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xUPbdkpzYlU/Vd_JnNKVjCI/AAAAAAAABqI/FdvHIBln4YI/s1600/blogger-image-143237154.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xUPbdkpzYlU/Vd_JnNKVjCI/AAAAAAAABqI/FdvHIBln4YI/s320/blogger-image-143237154.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pxWI_cOUyDk/Vd_JpSkhe6I/AAAAAAAABqQ/B-kCAJfvnmc/s1600/blogger-image-59976017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pxWI_cOUyDk/Vd_JpSkhe6I/AAAAAAAABqQ/B-kCAJfvnmc/s320/blogger-image-59976017.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">When they were completely dry I added the white ink line work and dots.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FppkSnOhBJQ/Vd_JgC0IYdI/AAAAAAAABpw/uOv5WZEdrns/s1600/blogger-image--369003093.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FppkSnOhBJQ/Vd_JgC0IYdI/AAAAAAAABpw/uOv5WZEdrns/s320/blogger-image--369003093.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Here is the finished piece along with some pebbles I made a while ago also inspired in another of my journal pages.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>LETS START:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Using the circle template and the chalk pen, I divided my felt square in four to mark the centre, then I traced a 3.5 cm diameter circle.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VMIxa-2sfVw/VaLlnYBrhhI/AAAAAAAABm8/vBzcrdx4-Lc/s1600/blogger-image--362490889.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VMIxa-2sfVw/VaLlnYBrhhI/AAAAAAAABm8/vBzcrdx4-Lc/s320/blogger-image--362490889.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Using three strands of DMC Stranded Cotton 3819 work a row of Stem Stitch over the circle.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NeE4QuLxdPU/VaLlWle5fyI/AAAAAAAABmE/DmDhkexy2fA/s1600/blogger-image--37727874.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NeE4QuLxdPU/VaLlWle5fyI/AAAAAAAABmE/DmDhkexy2fA/s320/blogger-image--37727874.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aGwYIkuHSLk/VaLlijd_azI/AAAAAAAABms/cmiggwB8-L8/s1600/blogger-image-204764991.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aGwYIkuHSLk/VaLlijd_azI/AAAAAAAABms/cmiggwB8-L8/s320/blogger-image-204764991.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Using the marked cross as a guide trace a concentric 2 cm diameter circle.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IB37L5cae2o/VaLlf6BcqWI/AAAAAAAABmk/1MRB60ZvdU4/s1600/blogger-image--254424101.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IB37L5cae2o/VaLlf6BcqWI/AAAAAAAABmk/1MRB60ZvdU4/s320/blogger-image--254424101.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Using three strands of DMC Stranded Cotton 340 work side by side Fly Stitches, using the circle as starting point and working outwards.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_wJbNyN8BfU/VaLlbKwyZyI/AAAAAAAABmU/VIKeaQpXGtg/s1600/blogger-image--1859688019.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_wJbNyN8BfU/VaLlbKwyZyI/AAAAAAAABmU/VIKeaQpXGtg/s320/blogger-image--1859688019.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zrq_Z1nXbw8/VaLlZKOw09I/AAAAAAAABmM/22mk_LW7LGY/s1600/blogger-image--1149209222.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zrq_Z1nXbw8/VaLlZKOw09I/AAAAAAAABmM/22mk_LW7LGY/s320/blogger-image--1149209222.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Again, using the marked chalk cross trace a second concentric circle, this time about 1 cm diameter.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IfV8v007rIM/VaLlk-kjEQI/AAAAAAAABm0/yz7xZNO3k1A/s1600/blogger-image--61708973.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IfV8v007rIM/VaLlk-kjEQI/AAAAAAAABm0/yz7xZNO3k1A/s320/blogger-image--61708973.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With three strands of DMC Stranded Cotton 3810 work a Whipped Sider Web using the circle as a guide.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UDHoySWg8pU/VaLm4-NUvcI/AAAAAAAABnQ/M_q4hXn-Cgk/s1600/blogger-image-22086909.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UDHoySWg8pU/VaLm4-NUvcI/AAAAAAAABnQ/M_q4hXn-Cgk/s320/blogger-image-22086909.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5bchjHkiqtA/VaLm9ocsmwI/AAAAAAAABng/PTemHpG9uW0/s1600/blogger-image-931015951.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5bchjHkiqtA/VaLm9ocsmwI/AAAAAAAABng/PTemHpG9uW0/s320/blogger-image-931015951.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ODZx2G3fksM/VaLnCNGNlWI/AAAAAAAABnw/Y5IhUwmuCZY/s1600/blogger-image--396782743.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ODZx2G3fksM/VaLnCNGNlWI/AAAAAAAABnw/Y5IhUwmuCZY/s320/blogger-image--396782743.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Using the silk thread or any other beading thread, attach the beads in the area between the Stem Stitch and the Fly Stitch, one bead between two Fly Stitches.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_32qPvIulko/VaLm7M-u4II/AAAAAAAABnY/koqfF2D6VUc/s1600/blogger-image-229799608.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_32qPvIulko/VaLm7M-u4II/AAAAAAAABnY/koqfF2D6VUc/s320/blogger-image-229799608.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nkMuRQMLtWA/VaLm24pxBqI/AAAAAAAABnI/quwPAI4FfxU/s1600/blogger-image--1089973343.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nkMuRQMLtWA/VaLm24pxBqI/AAAAAAAABnI/quwPAI4FfxU/s320/blogger-image--1089973343.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now with three strands of DMC Stranded Cotton 3819 and using the row of Fly Stitches as guide, make a second row of Fly Stitches this time working inwards.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SpIvdJg0Irw/VaLm_ye6u4I/AAAAAAAABno/93cLwCcQcpE/s1600/blogger-image-2108390822.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SpIvdJg0Irw/VaLm_ye6u4I/AAAAAAAABno/93cLwCcQcpE/s320/blogger-image-2108390822.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U2LjE5ajg_w/VaMW-VtYNZI/AAAAAAAABoo/2iTWE8PzdCM/s1600/blogger-image-615204500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U2LjE5ajg_w/VaMW-VtYNZI/AAAAAAAABoo/2iTWE8PzdCM/s320/blogger-image-615204500.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Finally, with three strands of DMC Stranded Cotton 3810 work a row of Chain Stitch outside the Stem Stitch.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0V2CHpxhfSQ/VaLnETPtdtI/AAAAAAAABn4/mHv4mM9FH3s/s1600/blogger-image--203361885.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0V2CHpxhfSQ/VaLnETPtdtI/AAAAAAAABn4/mHv4mM9FH3s/s320/blogger-image--203361885.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E7FfsHaY2Lc/VaMA5vXLKiI/AAAAAAAABoQ/HQYxu8Xp9ko/s1600/blogger-image-1627584659.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E7FfsHaY2Lc/VaMA5vXLKiI/AAAAAAAABoQ/HQYxu8Xp9ko/s320/blogger-image-1627584659.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-US">Some of you have asked me how do I get my
mandalas to be so 'perfect' and 'symmetrical', if I trace them in pencil
first or if I use any template.</span></div>

<b><span lang="EN-US">The answers:</span></b></div>

unless I'm working on a geometric pattern rosette.</span></div>

<b><span lang="EN-US">How do I do it?</span></b></div>

<span lang="EN-US">When tracing the circles I pay
attention to the distance between the curved line I'm drawing and what's

<br />
<span lang="EN-US">The most important thing to get almost 'perfect' and 'symmetrical' mandalas is PRACTICE!</span><br />
<span lang="EN-US">Lots of practice! </span></div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FsxuaKGdkZI/VWZd-vPS8xI/AAAAAAAABjc/TTklZL7_02M/s640/blogger-image-1101075854.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FsxuaKGdkZI/VWZd-vPS8xI/AAAAAAAABjc/TTklZL7_02M/s320/blogger-image-1101075854.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is not symmetric and is not a true circle.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FilC4VLFS-E/VWZd884RPGI/AAAAAAAABjU/C7rQRRzb3bw/s640/blogger-image-1965709370.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FilC4VLFS-E/VWZd884RPGI/AAAAAAAABjU/C7rQRRzb3bw/s320/blogger-image-1965709370.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The petal / leaves are all different!<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4ZfPOkBzeO0/VWZd7HLNLpI/AAAAAAAABjM/3Sj_k2HrPoQ/s640/blogger-image--326910419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4ZfPOkBzeO0/VWZd7HLNLpI/AAAAAAAABjM/3Sj_k2HrPoQ/s320/blogger-image--326910419.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is one looks more like a circle ;)<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-b9G15o2MIj4/VWWM0qE-R8I/AAAAAAAABiw/DkMgnWII2oY/s640/blogger-image-987849340.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-b9G15o2MIj4/VWWM0qE-R8I/AAAAAAAABiw/DkMgnWII2oY/s320/blogger-image-987849340.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As I fill in with little details it starts to look more even.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-46MQhTHXfOM/VWZeEahNBuI/AAAAAAAABj0/CzJLBvuCVm0/s640/blogger-image--689206462.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-46MQhTHXfOM/VWZeEahNBuI/AAAAAAAABj0/CzJLBvuCVm0/s320/blogger-image--689206462.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Getting better...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Q3tv1ez5D04/VWZfzzFtLtI/AAAAAAAABkE/KnhK13oxwjc/s1600/blogger-image--847219180.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Q3tv1ez5D04/VWZfzzFtLtI/AAAAAAAABkE/KnhK13oxwjc/s400/blogger-image--847219180.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
...And he finished mandala looks almost 'perfect'<br />

Lately I've been asked a lot about my favorite tools and supplies for my colored pencil work.<br />
When I started drawing and painting, I was looking for the 'perfect' pencil or sharpener or eraser, I've found I need more than one, each of them for a specific purpose... I use all what I've listed here!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Some weeks ago, a very lovely and polite lady wrote me via the contact form on this blog, to ask if she could use my <a href="http://www.magamerlina.com/2014/05/mehndi-inspired-mandala-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Mehndi Inspired Mandala Tutorial.</a></div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: center;">
She was planing a class mainly for kids at a shop near were she lives. She said she always wanted to draw a mandala but didn't know how to do it and my tutorial had helped her getting started.</div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: center;">
I immediately reply saying yes, first of all because she asked for my permission and second because I like to share what I do. I feel extremely sad when people use thing I've made just because "I found it on internet", with total disregard of what Copyright means.</div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: center;">
Yesterday I got another email from Rebecca, the lovely and polite lady, telling me about the crafty afternoon mandala workshop she had done. This is what she wrote:</div>
<div class="post-title entry-title" itemprop="name" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>"We had the crafty afternoon today. I had mostly kids
come by and I gave them a <a href="http://www.magamerlina.com/2014/05/mehndi-inspired-mandala-tutorial.html" target="_blank">print-out of your different elements/shapes.</a></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>I told them all to look your website up and <a href="http://www.magamerlina.com/2014/05/mandala-painted-pebble-video.html" target="_blank">watch your rock-painting</a> tutorial! </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>I was amazed at the mandala results these children could achieve very quickly (see pic attached - the blue mandala is mine).</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>In that first pic - the orange and red mandala was done by quite a young girl - she really got it! Even a boy had a go.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>I personally benefit from drawing the mandalas using your tutorial in a number of ways.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>It took me a few goes to get the hang of balancing white space, not being too busy & fussy, making good colour choices! etc.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>This is a really clear and easy to use tutorial. Thanks again for letting us use it."</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i> </i></div>

This is the story of my new sketchbook for my <a href="http://www.magamerlina.com/2014/12/the-mandala-self-exploration-tool.html" target="_blank">self-exploration mandala journey</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I ordered a very nice <a href="http://www.stillmanandbirn.com/zeta.html" target="_blank">Stillman and Birn Zeta Series A4 Hardbound Sketchbook</a> which I decided I wanted to personalized as I've done before.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This morning a drew a mandala on its cover, using my usual technique of dip pen and acrylic ink.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TcnYOCc77Jc/VLXboWaf3oI/AAAAAAAABc0/8OUptDAgLzo/s1600/blogger-image--1502355656.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TcnYOCc77Jc/VLXboWaf3oI/AAAAAAAABc0/8OUptDAgLzo/s1600/blogger-image--1502355656.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was very happy with the result and I posted a photo on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/MagaMerlina/309797059034941" target="_blank">Facebook</a> and <a href="http://instagram.com/magamerlina_" target="_blank">Instagram</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Normally, after drawing on a book cover, I apply a layer or two of Acrylic Matte Medium to protect my mandala. I was very impatient to finish so I used a hair dryer to speed up the process. It wasn't enough, it wasn't completely dry, I should have waited...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
DISASTER!!!! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I applied the acrylic medium the white ink went all over the place.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I ruined it... </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After many failed attempts to fix it, including covering it with white acrylic paint, then black acrylic paint, I started to remove all the layers with sand paper.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Slowly, my mandala started to appear like a lost buried ancient treasure.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It reminded me of the process I'm embarking on, <a href="http://www.magamerlina.com/2014/12/the-mandala-self-exploration-tool.html" target="_blank">my journey of self discovery through The Great Round of the Mandala</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The process is the same, its excavating what is hidden in my unconscious, like removing layers I've been applying through out my life, may be to protect myself...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There will be beautiful things, not so beautiful things and ugly things. They are all part of me, they are the whole, they are MY SELF... They are the treasure...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With much love and care I cleaned it and drew the lines and dots again. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KVBm-o7vtE8/VLXbvLF1_0I/AAAAAAAABdE/l6de1sRjcPU/s1600/blogger-image-1159323153.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KVBm-o7vtE8/VLXbvLF1_0I/AAAAAAAABdE/l6de1sRjcPU/s1600/blogger-image-1159323153.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
I embrace my journal as it is now, as I embrace my self, I embrace the beauty and the beast. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Almost two years ago I embroidered this Mandala.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As many of the thing I make, it didn't have any other purpose than making me happy while working on it. I store these "purposeless" things I make and makes me happy to look at them from time to time. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0_TIpKCn4G8/VKtqrApcFpI/AAAAAAAABcE/2-HbM0zrE94/s1600/946980_645566442124666_1279649672_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0_TIpKCn4G8/VKtqrApcFpI/AAAAAAAABcE/2-HbM0zrE94/s1600/946980_645566442124666_1279649672_n.jpg" height="400" width="392" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Two days ago, I was reading Stage One of the Grand Round of the Mandala in the Mandala Workbook I talked about on my previous <a href="http://www.magamerlina.com/2014/12/the-mandala-self-exploration-tool.html" target="_blank">post </a>and in an instant, I knew what to do with my embroidered mandala.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BF8lTh2m2sA/VKtkNq9oxAI/AAAAAAAABbQ/VaVRS_rdMmU/s1600/blogger-image-1702323725.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BF8lTh2m2sA/VKtkNq9oxAI/AAAAAAAABbQ/VaVRS_rdMmU/s1600/blogger-image-1702323725.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I pulled my mandala out, cut it out along with another piece of linen to use as a lining and piece them together with blanket stitch.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DhXi8Q-KIOM/VKtkK5NFqKI/AAAAAAAABbI/M704A6fjiRg/s1600/blogger-image-1527127557.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DhXi8Q-KIOM/VKtkK5NFqKI/AAAAAAAABbI/M704A6fjiRg/s1600/blogger-image-1527127557.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then I worked out a crochet border with holes following instructions from an old book. I had never done crochet before! Took me all day to do this.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I made two twisted cords to open/close my littke pouch , added two beautiful big glass beads I had </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and voila!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A1IP2r2IZDQ/VKtkWW2Pn6I/AAAAAAAABbo/GwbElilqKRA/s1600/blogger-image--288088268.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A1IP2r2IZDQ/VKtkWW2Pn6I/AAAAAAAABbo/GwbElilqKRA/s1600/blogger-image--288088268.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My gorgeous Womandala Bag is ready to store little treasures and secrets.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was challenging, I learned a little crochet and also somethings about myself.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was a very rewarding exercise and I feel very proud of myself!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now of to my journal to write about it, as part of my 2015 self-exploration journey.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<br />
<br />
<b>"My mandalas were cryptograms concerning the state of the self which were presented to me anew each day. In them I saw the self - that is, my whole being - actively at work. To be sure, at first I could only dimly understand them; but they seemed to me highly significant, and I guarded them like precious pearls."</b><br />
<b>Carl Gustav Jung. <i>Memories, Dreams, Reflections</i>.</b><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
My love for mandalas started after reading this book in 2000. It is Jung's semi-autobiographical book, recorded, edited and written by Aniela Jaffé, one of his co-workers for many years, following a long series of interviews with him.<br />
Since then I've been reading and learning about mandalas, making, drawing, painting, embroidering them.<br />
<br />
From tomorrow I'm committing to a year of self exploration using the mandala as a tool.<br />
I will be working through </div>
<div class="here" style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.shambhala.com/the-mandala-workbook.html" target="_blank">"The Mandala Workbook: A Creative Guide for Self-Exploration, Balance, and Well-Being"</a> by </div>
<div class="here" style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://creatingmandalas.com/susanne-f-fincher" target="_blank">Susanne F. Fincher's</a> </div>
<div class="here" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="here" style="text-align: center;">
You can do it on your own using the book but I know I need a little encouragement so, I enrolled in <a href="http://www.juliegibbons.com/" target="_blank">Julie Gibbons</a> 's online workshop <a href="http://www.juliegibbons.com/mandala-magic/" target="_blank">Mandala Magic 2015</a> starting 20 January. It is based on the book and done through art journaling. Sounds perfect!<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="here" style="text-align: center;">
I'll also be following the <a href="http://www.truenortharts.com/#!100-mandalas/c17kg" target="_blank">100Mandalas Challange</a>, where Kathryn and Megan will be starting the Mandala Workbook next week.</div>
<div class="here" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="here" style="text-align: center;">
If you want to learn about the history and psychology of the mandala, learn a little about how to interpret your personal mandalas and how to use your mandalas as a self-exploration tools, I suggest you start by reading <a href="http://www.shambhala.com/creating-mandalas-1.html" target="_blank">Creating Mandalas: For Insight, Healing, and Self-Expression</a> also by <a href="http://creatingmandalas.com/" target="_blank">Susanne F. Fincher</a>. I read this book the first time almost 15 years ago, and after C.G.Jung's writings, this remains as my favorite book on mandalas.</div>

What are your plans for this coming year?</div>

The end of the year activities don't let me much time to do my art.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yesterday I managed
to seat down at my table for the whole afternoon to paint this geometric constructed
mandala, inspired by the eight fold star found on Islamic art.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Most
of you know I don't usually use tools to trace my mandalas, but here I
am using a ruler and a compass again, and I have to say, I'm really
enjoying it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After I did the construction, I inked the design, then I colored it in using watercolor, gouache and ink.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: small;">Well, it's been a while since my last post, some of you follow me on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/MagaMerlina/309797059034941" target="_blank">Facebook</a> or <a href="http://instagram.com/magamerlina_" target="_blank">Instagram</a> where I have been posting these months, but I think is about time for a post on my blog.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">I have been busy with my Botanical Art course with the SBA, which is great but takes a lot of time and effort and I've been neglecting a little bit my other art, specially art journaling.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">This week I've been participating in a fabulous online <a href="http://www.juliegibbons.com/free-mandala-workshop/" target="_blank">5 Day Mandala Workshop</a> by <a href="http://www.juliegibbons.com/" target="_blank">Julie Gibbons</a>, which has sparked my inner magic again, I'm very thankful to her for that. From one of her excersises I was inspired to create this mandala.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">I never use a template or grid for my mandalas and I don't usually use ruler or a drawing compass, but I did for this one.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">First, I drew a grid in graphite so I could easily erase it, I used it to built my mandala in with graphite as well. For the grid I used a ruler and a compass.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">When I was happy with my mandala skeleton I went on top of the lines with </span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"> <a href="http://www.staedtler.co.nz/en/products/ink-writing-instruments/fineliners/triplus-fineliner-334-triangular-fineliner/" target="_blank">Staedtler Triplus Fineliners, </a></span>using the same colors I was going to use to color in later, I also added some details to the shapes.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-z-iQlEzGM9E/VHE9mAKmDjI/AAAAAAAABZo/i89LDLBRR6g/s1600/blogger-image--574160425.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-z-iQlEzGM9E/VHE9mAKmDjI/AAAAAAAABZo/i89LDLBRR6g/s1600/blogger-image--574160425.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Then, I colored my mandala with <a href="http://www.docmartins.com/collections/hydrus-fine-art-watercolor" target="_blank">Dr. PH. Martin's </a><a href="http://www.docmartins.com/collections/hydrus-fine-art-watercolor" target="_blank">Hydrus Fine Art Watercolor</a>. These watercolors are liquid, lightfast, archival, artist pigment watercolor, I chose them because they are very intense. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Csq3fW9QpUU/VHE9TkK7ZmI/AAAAAAAABZQ/wZ87OJLvIxk/s1600/blogger-image-1710542368.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Csq3fW9QpUU/VHE9TkK7ZmI/AAAAAAAABZQ/wZ87OJLvIxk/s1600/blogger-image-1710542368.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">When the watercolors had dried completely I added a gold outer border using Gold <a href="http://ww3.winsornewton.com/products/gouache/designers-gouache/" target="_blank">Winsor and Newton Designers Gouache </a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aKWbBc8mtBQ/VHE9gDdYO7I/AAAAAAAABZg/6k5wA9PIQ8s/s1600/blogger-image-400149511.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aKWbBc8mtBQ/VHE9gDdYO7I/AAAAAAAABZg/6k5wA9PIQ8s/s1600/blogger-image-400149511.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Once again I let it dry and I completed my mandala with my usual white ink details, using a dip pen and <a href="http://www.daler-rowney.com/content/fw-artists-inks" target="_blank">Daler-Rowney FW Acrylic Ink</a>. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EY8O4sFcL0s/VHE9ZTTufWI/AAAAAAAABZY/KWgkMAkXP8g/s1600/blogger-image-1548538099.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EY8O4sFcL0s/VHE9ZTTufWI/AAAAAAAABZY/KWgkMAkXP8g/s1600/blogger-image-1548538099.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">I hope you are inspired to create your own mandala!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Remember, <br /><span class="userContent">Drawing, painting, embroidering, making
individual mandalas is a very personal activity. This excludes the ones
used in established rituals or collective mandalas. <br /> Each mandala show who you are at that very moment, they are always unique as you are. <br /> I encourage you to get inspired but make your own, do not just copy, it does not make any sense that way!</span></span></div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This past days I've been in embroidery mode.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As always mandalas are present in my art even in embroidery.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I started by doing the mandalas on the first two photos to frame them in these gorgeous mini embroidery hoops made by <a href="http://dandelyne.com/" target="_blank">Dandelyne</a>.
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The one on the right is the first Gold Embroidery I make. They are real gold "threads", which were given to my by two very nice ladies a long time ago and I hadn't use.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then I found the "circles" and Creative Stitching by <a href="http://www.suespargo.com/index.php" target="_blank">Sue Spargo</a> which inspired me to make these little felt squares with circles full of different fun stitches.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used 100% wool felt from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CloudCraftShop" target="_blank">Cloud Craft Shop</a> and calico which I painted in various colours, DMC stranded cotton, some variegated threads and glass seed beads.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just in case you are wondering, I don't know yet what I will do with the little squares.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yesterday while having my morning shower I had this idea of making colored mandalas on pebbles.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Completely out of my comfort zone, well a little bit, I pulled out some supplies and some pebbles. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hours later this is what I got.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
The Process:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>1.</b> First I choose the colors I'm going to use (Lavender and Delft Blue don't come in the set pictured above, can be replaced by Dark Mauve Pink and Silver Gray)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Im8UUvh2e-c/U3q-qpvR0II/AAAAAAAABLA/4fCifjzoMug/s1600/IMG_4666.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Im8UUvh2e-c/U3q-qpvR0II/AAAAAAAABLA/4fCifjzoMug/s1600/IMG_4666.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>2.</b> I start always in the center, that way I can keep my mandala even, I don't use a compass or any template. Using my basic shapes page I choose to start with a spiral.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mT4IYpiQt4w/U3q_qXOKVzI/AAAAAAAABLo/uOOp5FkOqqI/s1600/IMG_4646.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mT4IYpiQt4w/U3q_qXOKVzI/AAAAAAAABLo/uOOp5FkOqqI/s1600/IMG_4646.jpg" height="319" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>3.</b> Now I add one of the borders. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0oLdfwqttts/U3q_tr6aufI/AAAAAAAABL0/vjSOWLh4cLA/s1600/IMG_4649.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0oLdfwqttts/U3q_tr6aufI/AAAAAAAABL0/vjSOWLh4cLA/s1600/IMG_4649.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>4.</b> Then I add petal shapes around the border.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C8mExmXLdZQ/U3q_wcy_z_I/AAAAAAAABL8/_yZ4qyYo-SU/s1600/IMG_4650.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C8mExmXLdZQ/U3q_wcy_z_I/AAAAAAAABL8/_yZ4qyYo-SU/s1600/IMG_4650.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>5.</b> I add some filling to the petal shapes. I start adding leaves.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>6.</b> Fill the leaves.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CaSND8O0CW0/U3q_6PA6IQI/AAAAAAAABMc/yjaU6IzLqWo/s1600/IMG_4658.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CaSND8O0CW0/U3q_6PA6IQI/AAAAAAAABMc/yjaU6IzLqWo/s1600/IMG_4658.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>7.</b> Add an outer adornment to the leaves and some circles on the spaces between them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>8.</b> Add a border again.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> 9.</b> More leaves or petals, add fillings.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>10.</b> Outer adornment and little circles in the spaces between petals/leaves.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mFc7O3AG13c/U3rAIeMJOFI/AAAAAAAABNQ/YfcEUa5Xc50/s1600/IMG_4664.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mFc7O3AG13c/U3rAIeMJOFI/AAAAAAAABNQ/YfcEUa5Xc50/s1600/IMG_4664.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SBM4fMjwufg/U3rATqKJg5I/AAAAAAAABNg/VcdKt289AVQ/s1600/IMG_4665.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SBM4fMjwufg/U3rATqKJg5I/AAAAAAAABNg/VcdKt289AVQ/s1600/IMG_4665.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can keep repeating from step 3, adding more elements from the
basic shapes page or your own, making your mandala as big and complex as
you want.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When you feel you have finished your mandala write the date.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is perfectly fine if it doesn't turn up completely round and symmetrical, you will get there with practice.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is a process to relax and have fun regardless of the end result.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Look at your mandala with love, you just made it and it is precious! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Keep all your mandalas even if you don't like them much, you can follow how they change with time.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
If you have any question you can ask on the comments , send me an e-mail or through the contact form on the left of this blog.<br />
